Breyer Horse Customizing: Where To Start

July 7, 2016

Customizing your Breyers is one of the treasured pastimes of collectors, and one that evolved decades ago along with the hobby. Creating your own dream models goes hand in hand with creating, and as collectors have found out all  too well, the only limits are your imagination!

It can seem overwhelming to start customizing, with so many options where do you start? Well, picking a horse to paint from is always a good idea. Finding a reference picture of what you would like to create is an important step that can help you on the way to success, and even better if you can have pictures of both sides of the horse! Photos will help you as you begin to paint and can help keep your work as realistic as possible!

Before you begin painting, you’ll need to make the choice of what model and materials you are going to use. Paints are an obvious first choice, but there are options like pastels or etching, in addition to the choice between acrylic paints and oil paints. Acrylic paints are great for first time customizers because they are easy to work with and to clean up.

What model you will paint is the final step, and can be a tough choice. Picking a model that resembles your reference horse is important, and picking a scale you are comfortable with helps as well. Golden Oak Stables has a myriad of Activity Kits that can get you started on your journey into customizing, and they include everything you’ll need to complete your first horse!

So what’s stopping you? Are you ready to let the artist in you out?

Breyer Horse Customizing: Where To Start

March 10, 2016

One of the more interesting aspects of Breyer collecting is all of the creative ways to get involved with collecting. Customizing your models is one of the oldest and most popular ways to explore your collection. Many collectors find that they have customized their horses before they even know what customizing is!

Any change you make to a model horse is considered customizing by most model horse collectors. This can be as simple as adding a new marking to the horse or as drastic as completely reshaping and resculpting it! Customizing can go as far as you want it to, the only limit is your imagination!

Most customizers start off with repainting their models in either acrylic or oil paint. Acrylic paint has the ease of a quick dry where oil paint has a longer dry time, and gives the artist more time to work with the paint. It’s all a personal preference. But before you start painting away, Breyer horses need to be properly sanded and prepped with a primer, or the paint won’t stick!

Customizers can also reposition their horses using heat and sculpting epoxies. These creations can take hundreds of hours of work! Some artists even find themselves making original sculptures, which is where Breyer artists are born!

Have you ever customized a Breyer? Golden Oak Stables is stocked with the Kits you need to get started. All that is waiting is your creative touch!

Breyer Horse Collecting: A World Of Talents

October 3, 2013

Talents range the gamut of the world, but all of us have something special about us that makes us unique. What’s fun about collecting Breyers is that so many of us have talents that we can use to create wonderful things for our Breyers!

Many collectors get curious once they start collecting about what they might be able to do for themselves. Crafts are a fun past time for so many and many hobbyists find pleasure in creating miniatures for their horses. Things like halters, hay nets, barns and stables are all things that can be created with just a little creativity and passion! These fun miniatures can bring a new life to your Breyer collection and realism to your stable.

Customizing is a popular activity for many Breyer collectors. With so many kits available from Golden Oak Stables, there’s no reason to not give it a try! Everyone starts off shaky, even the most talented of artists, but with some passion and determination you might just create a champion of your own.  With a variety of different mediums and scales, play around with customizing until you find out what works for you!

One talent you might not think of that can be fun for collecting is sewing. There are so many things you can do with a sewing machine, and it doesn’t stop with Breyer collecting. Seamstresses can make things like blankets for your horses to keep warm with, but they can also make things like protective pouches to carry your models to and from shows or for storage. For the seamstress that is ready to try her hand at miniature making, miniature doll clothing is a way to bring your sewing skills to your hobby, and a new wardrobe to your riders!

Everyone starts off slow, but determination can get you so far! What talents do you have? Everyone has something that they can share with the model horse hobby, what’s your talent?
