Breyer Horse Customizing: Where To Start

July 7, 2016

Customizing your Breyers is one of the treasured pastimes of collectors, and one that evolved decades ago along with the hobby. Creating your own dream models goes hand in hand with creating, and as collectors have found out all  too well, the only limits are your imagination!

It can seem overwhelming to start customizing, with so many options where do you start? Well, picking a horse to paint from is always a good idea. Finding a reference picture of what you would like to create is an important step that can help you on the way to success, and even better if you can have pictures of both sides of the horse! Photos will help you as you begin to paint and can help keep your work as realistic as possible!

Before you begin painting, you’ll need to make the choice of what model and materials you are going to use. Paints are an obvious first choice, but there are options like pastels or etching, in addition to the choice between acrylic paints and oil paints. Acrylic paints are great for first time customizers because they are easy to work with and to clean up.

What model you will paint is the final step, and can be a tough choice. Picking a model that resembles your reference horse is important, and picking a scale you are comfortable with helps as well. Golden Oak Stables has a myriad of Activity Kits that can get you started on your journey into customizing, and they include everything you’ll need to complete your first horse!

So what’s stopping you? Are you ready to let the artist in you out?
