Breyer Horse Customizing: Where To Start

March 10, 2016

One of the more interesting aspects of Breyer collecting is all of the creative ways to get involved with collecting. Customizing your models is one of the oldest and most popular ways to explore your collection. Many collectors find that they have customized their horses before they even know what customizing is!

Any change you make to a model horse is considered customizing by most model horse collectors. This can be as simple as adding a new marking to the horse or as drastic as completely reshaping and resculpting it! Customizing can go as far as you want it to, the only limit is your imagination!

Most customizers start off with repainting their models in either acrylic or oil paint. Acrylic paint has the ease of a quick dry where oil paint has a longer dry time, and gives the artist more time to work with the paint. It’s all a personal preference. But before you start painting away, Breyer horses need to be properly sanded and prepped with a primer, or the paint won’t stick!

Customizers can also reposition their horses using heat and sculpting epoxies. These creations can take hundreds of hours of work! Some artists even find themselves making original sculptures, which is where Breyer artists are born!

Have you ever customized a Breyer? Golden Oak Stables is stocked with the Kits you need to get started. All that is waiting is your creative touch!
